Analyses and solutions for the transboundary management of water quality, biodiversity, fisheries and other ecosystem services

 

The River Oder, as the river forming the German-Polish border, is a shared resource that provides numerous ecosystem services. The aim of this EU-funded project is to develop binational management solutions.

EU-LIFE Bachmuschel – a project for species and waterway conservation

 

This project's aim is to stabilise and restore populations of the thick-shelled river mussel (Unio crassus), which is critically endangered in Germany. As a species characteristic of fast-flowing, nutrient-poor rivers, it is an important indicator species for intact river ecosystems. The project is part of the EU-funded LIFE programme.

Cormorant-induced mortality in Western Cod

 

The project aims to quantify predation by cormorants along the western coast of the Baltic Sea. The focus is on cod. The aim is to assess the potential impacts on the population dynamics of cod.

Project: Volga Pike Perch

 

The distribution of the Volga pike perch (Sander volgensis), which has been caught in increasing numbers in some federal states over the past 15 years or so, is to be investigated.

 

The study examines aspects of competition for food with native fish species and collects data on the growth and sexual maturation of the Volga pike perch in comparison with the native pike perch (Sander lucioperca)

Project: Climate and Carp Farming in Brandenburg, Germany 

Climate change adaptation in carp pond farming in Brandenburg: Deriving management strategies for individual ponds based on water requirements, suitability for production and ecosystem services

 

The project aims to determine water requirements for carp pond farming and to develop strategies for the optimal use of water in order to sustain these farms and the associated ecosystem services.

Project: Optimising Carp Rearing

Optimisation of the rearing conditions for edible carp as a function of geosmin and methylisoborneol concentrations in the rearing and holding environment

 

The aim of the project is to help carp pond farms produce the highest possible product quality without any muddy aftertaste, thereby improving their profitability.

Project: UV Trout

Fish health in the context of climate change: the use of UV-C radiation in rainbow trout aquaculture

 

The rearing and husbandry of salmonids are to be optimised using UV-C radiation in order to support the fishes’ health and help them adapt to climate change. The study will compare the effects of different UV-C sources on fish pathogens under standardised laboratory conditions.

The environmental, social and economic dimensions of recreational fishing on the German section of the River Oder

 

The project is investigating the long-term consequences of the fish die-off in the River Oder in the summer of 2022, caused by a massive golden algal bloom (Prymnesium parvum). To this end, the project requires the assistance of volunteer anglers who can document their catches for later analysis.

Scientific monitoring and evaluation of eel restocking measures in Brandenburg to promote sustainable inland fisheries

 

The aim is to draw up eel management plans designed to ensure the conservation of the species and the sustainable fishery use of eels, in accordance with the EU Eel Regulation.

Project "MINIKANZA" 

Aquaculture of pike perch (Sander lucioperca) is hampered by a shortage of fry.  Cannibalism is particularly prevalent in fish measuring 12–45 mm

 

The project aims to systematically investigate, for the first time, previously identified potential for optimised rearing techniques for the hatchery rearing of pike perch, with a view to minimising losses due to cannibalism.

Blue-green algae blooms are a widespread problem, including in regional fish farming. The aim is to investigate the potential exposure of edible fish to toxins, including the transfer of cyanotoxins from the rearing water into the fish

 

The aim of the project is to develop measures to minimise losses in marketable quality and to maintain food safety.

The project involves collecting robust data in order to test a number of hypotheses derived from ecological contexts

Conservation of biodiversity and other ecosystem services through sustainably managed pond landscapes in Lusatia

 

The aim of the project was to draw up transdisciplinary recommendations for the further development of governance and policy instruments that can be used to safeguard and preserve pond farming and biodiversity.
